Description: Ecosystems of the world are always striving for balance, and they do so in quite amazing ways. In healthy ecosystems, all parts of it - the animals, plants, microorganisms - strike a natural balance between giving and taking. In the case of whales, It turns out that they not only eat fish and krill, they also help them to reproduce. But that's not all they do. They also help to sequester carbon deep into the ocean. This is the story of how whales change the climate. It offers humanity a path forward to begin to give back to the planet that has given us everything. đ Visit the official website âč sustainablehuman.org/stories/how-whales-change-climate đ LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and SIGN UP FOR NOTIFICATIONS to be alerted to new inspiring stories đ Support us on Patreon âč patreon.com/sustainablehuman đ Make a one-time donation âč sustainablehuman.org/donate Sustainable Human is a 501c3 non-profit whose mission is to evolve human consciousness by examining the underlying stories that give rise to the environmental, social, and economic crises of our time and offer new stories that help humanity to live in harmony with each other and the biosphere. đ Hire us to tell your story âč sustainablehuman.org/video-storytelling đ Sponsor a story âč sustainablehuman.org/sponsor-a-story đ Help us translate this video âč sustainablehuman.org/translate đ Story by George Monbiot âč monbiot.com 0:00 - What Is a Trophic Cascade? 0:20 - The Argument For Killing Whales 0:49 - How Whales Sustain Ocean Living Systems 2:26 - How Whales Change Climate Transcript: One of the most exciting scientific findings of the past half century has been the discovery of widespread trophic cascades. A trophic cascade is an ecological process which starts at the top of the food chain and tumbles all the way down to the bottom. We all know that whales eat fish and krill and some people have argued that killing whales is good for human beings as it boosts the food available for us to eat â and so you would think. But as the great whales declined so did the numbers of fish and krill. It seems counterintuitive â surely their numbers would rise as their major predators disappeared â but it now turns out that whales not only eat these animals they also keep them alive. In fact, they help to sustain the entire living system of the ocean.
